Making pathways

I am really fortunate that the parents who choose to enrol their children in 'Starting With Art's' workshops really do understand the importance of 'process, not product' in art education. John Dewey (1934) believed that an individual creates themselves through art making. For Dewey art is not a 'thing' it is something that happens. The children 'Starting With Art' work with sometimes do not make 'things' from materials, they use them as part of a process of a wider experience, communicating their ideas with materials as they create. This workshop saw they children think about constructing alternative pathways to get from A to B, challenging their thought patterns and led to a deep questioning regarding connections and mapping.
